Saturday 4th August 2012
The Society held a Family History Day on on Saturday 4th August at its Dartford meetings venue, Dartford Technology College. The Event was held to aid those new to family history both members and non members of the Society and was a new venture for the Society.
Despite being held during the middle of the Olympics 27 people attended. The visitors were able to discuss and ask for help and advice about their research with experienced volunteers. Janet Rose, Society Librarian, gave a talk and presented a PowerPoint display "Starting your Family History" (photo above). There was a large display giving details and examples of various aspects of Family history put together by David Cufley (President). The Society Bookstall was also available.
The day was successful in many ways, of the 27 who attended 9 joined the Society and the comments from the visitors are also encouraging:
"The enthusiasm of the participating members was very infectious. As a result my wife and I have joined the Society today". "Joining today 4th August". "We came along with our children who are very interested in finding out more... we were made very welcome by the volunteers..." Note from the children "We were very interested after talking to the volunteers".
It was encouraging that there were some young people who came along and seemed to be very interested in the various activities.
We will be evaluating the day and looking at ways to improve the content and make available in the future such Events to Society Members and Non Members.
I would like to thank my fellow Society Sub-committee members, Barbara Attwaters, Barbara Phillips, Janet Rose and Mike Weeks and all the volunteers who worked so hard in making the day a success.
